The Digitization Unit is responsible for the workflow processes of turning analogue library materials into digital form, thereby promoting access to Makerere university’s rich research outputs through the institutional repository. Digitized materials include theses and dissertations, peer-reviewed research and conference papers authored by Makerere University researchers as well as significant audio-visual materials for Uganda’s cultural heritage.
At the same time the Digitization Unit together with the Library Preservation Committee has strategically embarked on planning for long-term digital preservation of Makerere University’s special collections, Uganda’s archives housed at Makerere University Library by virtue of the Legal Deposit Act of 1958 and grey literature of historical significance.
The final output of the Digitization Unit is two-fold: the Institutional Repository, dubbed the Uganda Scholarly Digital Library, and the soon to come digital archive.
The workflow of the Digitization Unit depends on various key players. These include Directorate of ICT Support, Directorate of Research and Graduate Training, Africana/Special Collections, Audio-Visual Archives Unit and the various librarians who are responsible for Communities and Collections in the Institutional Repository.
